Again, not many chances for design, so I had to do something fun for my final paper. It was a journal of our bookselling experiences, so I took a notebook background and had fun with it. The only thing I forgot to do was put my name on it! Oops ~ luckily the instructor had a process of elimination.

Winter '09 ~ Advanced Editing ~ Contest Flier

Winter was fairly sparse on the design aspect of publishing. On the heels of my Book Editing class in Fall '08 came my Advanced Editing class. Somehow I was beat to the punch to do both the cover and interior design for this contest, so I volunteered to do the flier design. It was a blast, and everyone seemed to like it. There was WAY to much text to fit on an 8.5 x 11, but I think I managed it well.

Our final project was fairly open-ended. I went back and forth on a lot of topics, and I finally settled on a brochure about women traveling solo. I knew I wanted to travel solo in the future, so what better way to learn about solo travel abroad while earning a grade. I am very proud of how this project turned out and I wish I had the money to print these up.

We only had two graded assignments for this class. One was our midterm assignment of repurposing a government document into something useable for a very specific group of people. I chose the high school choir trip to Eastern Europe and Africa. I wanted to design something that was easy to carry around, had good information in it, but wasn't too overwhelming. I had to figure out how to order the pages so I could print duplex and fold them in half and have it read right. Below are the spreads in the order of assembly. I halved a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet for this project to make printing easier. I did have a hard time using the cutter, though.

Samples of my full title page, chapter opener, and final cover. The fonts I chose were Brioso Pro for the body and Tagettes for the display font. This also began my second love affair ~ with DaFont.

Our final project was to design the cover, front matter, and the first 50 pages of any book we chose. I had a hard time because I wanted to do something modern, but it wasn't available electronically. I perused Project Gutenberg for something I could use, and ended up searching for Charlotte Perkins Gilman just to see what came up. I found Herland, and thought the premise sounded pretty good. I went to Powell's, bought it, and fell in love with the story.

I love cover design, so I did a lot of variations before I came up with my final design.

This is when the fun began. We had designed the guts of these three books, and now it was time to design a cover for them. So much fun.

Fall '08 ~ Publishing Software ~ Poem

Our task was to create an art piece using a poem. I chose a T.S. Eliot poem about a city, and parts of it talked of the dirty, dingy moments of living in a big city. I also learned a valuable InDesign lesson from this: Layers are your friend. All of the elements in this piece are on one layer (eek!)
